Overview of Mastering Emotions

Mastering Emotions is a straightforward, easy to understand course that teaches the skills of Emotional Intelligence (EI). EI is the ability to recognise and manage your emotions and respond well to the emotions of others. Mastering Emotions is suitable for workplaces and private individuals.

EI has four quadrants: Self-Awareness, Self-Management, Social Awareness and Relationship Management. Each quadrant has its own skills, but is inextricably linked to the other three. When you take our course, Mastering Emotions, you will see why all of these skills are so important.

Emotional Intelligence

Business and organisational leaders realise that dealing well with emotions is crucial to working effectively, especially amidst economic change and uncertainty. Emotions can be tested and resilience strained. Behaviour can be highly charged, erratic or out of proportion with events. Feelings are hurt, self-esteem weakened and workplace outcomes adversely affected.

When leaders and staff are challenged by unexpected or unwelcome events, they need personal resources to fall back on. Understanding and managing emotional responses will help workplace leaders and others prevent and minimise damage. They will be better able to cope when the unexpected or the undesired occurs. When staff manage their emotions well, workplaces function more effectively.

Losses resulting from poor behaviour are reduced or even eliminated. Workplaces benefit by an improved workflow. Individuals benefit, as they are less stressed when they understand and manage their own and others’ emotional reactivity when stress or change occurs. It makes sense to learn these valuable skills, so that you have them when you most need them.

In private life also, knowing how to respond appropriately to family, friends and loved ones can save relationships from deteriorating or even failing. The inability to appreciate different perspectives and reactions can have disastrous results. When you understand how each person can perceive the same situation differently, you have a head start in responding with more care and empathy.

Course Details

The course covers the four components of Emotional Intelligence: Self-Awareness, Self-Management, Social Awareness and Relationship Management. Delivery is in 2 x 4-hour sessions. There are presentations, activities, discussions, notes, home activities and a certificate on completion. Workplaces can include an optional pre and post course assessment of participants and a written report. Private individuals can put their name down to be informed of the next course.

Mastering Emotions is suitable for those who want to improve their ‘people skills’, including leaders, managers, and teams. Designed for 12 participants, but we can discuss other options if required.

For workplaces with behaviour problems, the course is a useful preliminary to our longer course, The Enneagram at Work, which explores attitudes and behaviours at work more extensively.
